Valparaíso & Viña del Mar Day Trip from Santiago: A Practical Guide

If you have one free day in Santiago and want to see the Pacific, this is the classic trip: the colourful hills of Valparaíso, the gardens of Viña del Mar and, if time allows, the sand dunes of Concón. The two cities sit side by side but feel completely different, and with good planning you can enjoy both in a single day. Here’s how to get there from Santiago, what to see in each city, how long to spend at each stop and a few tips to make the day run smoothly.

Is a Valparaíso day trip from Santiago worth it?

Yes, especially if your time in Chile is short. Valparaíso is about 120 km (75 miles) from Santiago, roughly an hour and a half along Route 68 in normal traffic, and Viña del Mar is right next door. In one day you can see the essentials: a couple of Valparaíso’s famous hills, Viña’s seafront and a long lunch by the ocean. If you love slow travel and museums, spend a night on the coast. For a first visit, though, a full day works really well.

How to get from Santiago to Valparaíso and Viña del Mar

By bus

Buses leave frequently from Santiago’s main bus terminals for both Valparaíso and Viña del Mar. It’s the cheapest option, but once you arrive you’ll need to get around the hills, viewpoints and the two cities on your own, by local transport or on foot (with lots of stairs).

By train

There’s currently no direct passenger train between Santiago and Valparaíso. The train you’ll see on the coast (Merval) links towns within the Valparaíso region, not the capital.

By rental car

It gives you freedom, but parking on Valparaíso’s hills is tricky and the streets are narrow and steep.

On a private tour

We pick you up at your hotel, home or even the airport, and the vehicle is just for your group. We drop you right at each spot, so you never have to hunt for parking, and you set the pace. It’s the easiest way to combine Valparaíso, Viña del Mar and Concón in one day.

What to see in Valparaíso

Valparaíso’s historic quarter has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2003, and you’ll feel it right away: stairways, lookouts, colourful houses and street art around every corner.

  • Port viewpoint: the best view of the bay, the ships and the city climbing up the hills.
  • Plaza Sotomayor: the city’s civic and naval heart, facing the pier.
  • National Maritime Museum: a photo stop outside, with ocean views.
  • Cerro Concepción and Cerro Alegre: alleys, murals, cafés and some of the historic funiculars (ascensores) that made the city famous.
  • Bay boat ride (optional): a fun way to see the port from the water and, with luck, a few sea lions.

What to see in Viña del Mar and Concón

Viña del Mar, the “Garden City”, is tidier and more laid-back than its neighbour, with seafront avenues, parks and beaches.

  • Flower Clock (Reloj de Flores): Viña’s classic photo spot.
  • Quinta Vergara: a large park with gardens and the Vergara Palace.
  • Reñaca: the perfect place for lunch by the sea, with seafood or something simpler, as your group prefers.
  • Concón sand dunes: a dune field overlooking the Pacific, great for photos and a calm end to the day.

A one-day itinerary that works

This is how we run our private Valparaíso, Viña del Mar and Concón tour, about 8 hours in total:

  1. 8:00 am, pick-up at your hotel in Santiago. On the way to the coast we stop at Río Tinto for a complimentary wine tasting.
  2. Morning in Valparaíso: the port viewpoint, the Maritime Museum (outside), Plaza Sotomayor and Cerro Concepción and Cerro Alegre. The boat ride is optional.
  3. Midday in Viña del Mar: Quinta Vergara, the Flower Clock (with an optional drone video of your group) and lunch by the sea in Reñaca.
  4. Afternoon in Concón: the dunes, for photos and ocean views.
  5. Around 4:00 pm, back at your hotel in Santiago.

If your group wants to linger somewhere, we adjust the other stops to keep the day on time. A guide is optional: you can add a specialist or bilingual guide to bring the history of each hill to life.

Tips for a perfect day

  • Bring a jacket even if Santiago is hot. The sea breeze makes it feel cooler, and mornings on the coast are often overcast.
  • Wear comfortable shoes: exploring Valparaíso means plenty of steps up and down.
  • Leave valuables at the hotel and keep your phone out only for photos, as you would in any busy port city.
  • Pack sunglasses and sunscreen, even in winter.
  • Carry some cash in Chilean pesos for a funicular ride, the boat or small purchases.
  • Pick your day wisely: summer weekends bring heavy traffic on Route 68 and along the coast; weekdays flow much better.
